The production of film

There are 5 main stages to film production.

The first of which being DEVELOPMENT. This stage is when the initial ideas for a film are created, possibly inspired from a book, another film or a true story. The next stage of development would be the breakdown of the film (into 1 paragraph scene sections). In this breakdown there is a description of the narrative, the moods and characters included within. Over a few months a screen play is created from the breakdown. This screenplay will be reviewed and altered following its creation and then a finalized piece will be created. A film distributor may be contacted at an early stage to assess the likely market and potential financial success of the film. Hollywood distributors adopt a business approach and consider factors such as the film genre, the target audience, the historical success of similar films, the actors who might appear in the film, and potential directors.

The next stage is PRE-PRODUCTION. In this stage all the stages of production are carefully created in order for the production stage to go smoothly. In this stage the production company and production office and both established. A budget is created and for major productions insurance is bought to protect against accidents.

In PRODUCTION An actual film is shot and created. More crew will be recruited at this stage, such as the property master, script supervisor, assistant directors, stills photographer, picture editor, and sound editors. These are just the most common roles in filmmaking; the production office will be free to create any unique blend of roles to suit the various responsibilities possible during the production of a film (e.g. ‘Runners’).

POST-PRODUCTION is when all the films raw footage is put together by an editor. It’s is when all the editing of the film (such as the input of non-diegetic sound).

The distribution of film

The final stage is DISTRIBUTION, where the film is released to cinemas or, occasionally, to consumer media (DVD, VCD, VHS, Blu-ray) or direct download from a provider. The film is duplicated as required and distributed to cinemas for exhibition (screening). Press kits, posters, and other advertising materials are published and the film is advertised and promoted. A way in which to promote a film before it is released is to slowly release information about the film into the media in order for it to circulate around social media websites. An example of this is the mention of Ben Affleck being chosen for the role of Batman in the next Batman film. The reason that Warner Bros. will have chosen to do this is that alerts the public to the film and create controversy, and said controversy will still have people talking about the film.
